Lightning Talk 1: Facebook “Terragraph” and Digital Inclusion

By: TBD

The City of San Jose will be the first city in the world to pioneer Facebook’s new wireless “Terragraph” technology. Terragraph serves as a cutting-edge new way to connect to the Internet— delivering high-speed Internet at one-gigabit rates wirelessly without installing fiber optic cable underground. Beta testing has begun and will continue until late 2017. If successful, Terragraph will help us bridge our digital divide by providing low-income communities with more affordable high-speed Internet options. This lightning talk will focus on how San Jose is using innovating technology like Facebook “Terragraph” and partnerships with other corporate partners to help bridge the digital divide in San Jose.

Lightning Talk 2: Unleash Your Geek

By: Sachin Jain, Policy Advisor for Innovation Policy – Office of the Mayor

The Mayor’s “Unleash Your Geek” initiative has roots in the belief that San Jose’s people are its greatest asset. By harnessing the intellectual power of our community, we can innovate our way to a more efficient City, and in areas that don’t normally receive much new thought. In May of 2016, the Mayor launched the first “Unleash Your Geek” opportunity to challenge residents to create a technology solution to make graffiti abatement more efficient. Currently, removing graffiti from overpasses, freeway signs, and sound walls is labor intensive and expensive. Clean up requires the closure of freeway lanes, large bucket cranes, and dozens of city and state personnel. The City received 140 submissions and is now in the process of choosing finalists that will be given funding and incubator space to develop a working prototype of their proposal. This talk will focus on how the Mayor’s office is building a pipeline for community driven innovation to use technology to solve government challenges.

Lightning Talk 3: Autonomous Vehicles via our Transportation Innovation Zone

By: Shireen Santosham, Chief Innovation Officer – Office of the Mayor

In 2014, San Jose created a “Transportation Innovation Zone” located in North San Jose that offers a multi-mile network of streets, signals, and infrastructure as a platform for technology innovators. With 21 traffic signals, over 670 streetlights and standard public transit infrastructure – this zone serves as the perfect playground to develop tomorrow’s self-driving vehicles, automated traffic enforcement systems, vehicle to infrastructure tools, streetlight innovations, traffic sensors and more. The TIZ has attracted corporate partners across Silicon Valley: Cisco and partners are testing new Vehicle–Infrastructure communications technology employing Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) and traffic analytics approaches; Phillips is installing Smart Poles, that allow for enhanced cellular communications, and employ PG&E wireless Smart Meter technology; BMW and Toyota use traffic signal data feeds to test smart vehicle applications; and leading technology companies are helping us build an autonomous vehicle zone to accelerate the next wave of evolution in how we get around. Innovation like this is moving us towards our goal of becoming the premier global hub of urban technology innovation for smart cities. This talk will focus on how San Jose is using the TIZ to advance autonomous vehicle technology to usher in tomorrow’s transportation.
